Yesterday’s internet radio silence

If you didn’t notice, many online radio stations were closed yesterday. No, this was most likely not a glitch. In fact, it was the opposite, a planned protest. Congress approved higher rates back in May for the royalties. This may cause tons of small and big online radio stations alike to have to close down because of the lack of funds to afford the new higher rates, which come into effect on July 15th. Those in support of the raise say that it helps new music to come around by supporting the artists in what they do. However, if this new law ends up closing down most of the online radio stations that had been free in the past, these same artists may not get as much exposure as they were used to getting.

I think that maybe a slight raise would be in line, but a raise in rates enough to close down the majority of free online radio stations is way too much.
