My notes on the SMaG CD
Word Count: 562The First 30 minutes
Why am I here?
Purpose .. what is my purpose?
Goals… setting goals that you don’t think you can do
Are we setting too general goals or too easy goals
a Purpose is not a Fix, or a short term goal, or something you can “finish” in your life
purpose should be about something that you love
does it inspire and challenge you? purpose is about being, not doing
Unless you have a purpose, your life will become about doing to get; you’ll start living your job without THINKING about who they are trying to BE.
Getting Started when you’re Stopped
Your purpose should wake you up in the morning when you don’t want to get out of bed
Your purpose should pull you out of a rut
Your purpose should overcome fear
your purpose should let you CHOOSE not to be stopped by circumstances
It’s okay to have an off day!
It’s okay to have an off day. Its not okay to stay there!
Having a purpose statement lets you realize that when you take a day off, you’re the one who pays the consequences. Off days will help you realize that it’s a conscious choice and that YOU have a say of who you are, always. Don’t let yourself blame the world for your problems. If you blame someone else and think that you can’t control your life, you won’t try to fix it. Forgive yourself. Have a sense of humor.
Everything you do is a choice! If you stop using it, you’ll forget about it.
Making a Purpose Statement
What do you love?
Family, Friends, activities. Make a list about them, and what you FEEL about who/what you love.
(etc love, pride, safety, humor)
“Who I am is…” “I’m commited to being…”
Make it so powerful that it could get you started on the absolute worst day of your life. Make it no more than 3 or 4 lines. Don’t include the word person. Don’t make it something that can be finished.
Share your purpose statement with someone who knows you really well. Ask them what they think and listen to what they say without interrupting. If they aren’t impressed, then you’re purpose statement isn’t big enough or powerful enough. It takes practice. Don’t expect to get it done perfect on the first try. If the purpose statement lights both of you up, then it’s probably a good one.
Goals go inside your purpose statement
When you reach a goal, you are usually disappointed. The best part about a goal is the trip, not reaching the end point. (this is why your purpose isn’t something you should be able to finish in your lifetime)
Keep it with you
Keep your goals with you literally on paper. On the other side, ask yourself what you are currently thinking about, and ask yourself what’s missing. Put it in a place where it’s the first thing you see in the morning. Keep one literally with you. Put it on your office workspace. Get in the habit of asking yourself those questions constantly. Try to keep yourself “all there”. Don’t do things that don’t fit the circumstance. If you wonder why you are doing something, why you are overreacting, then STOP yourself! Remember your purpose and try to live to where you can be proud of how you’re living. Don’t let things go in one ear and out the other. Pay attention. Don’t memorize it! Your mind wont let you go somewhere that it feels uncomfortable.
