If you haven’t seen the video of her original answer, watch both of these videos. If you’ve seen the first one, you can skip ahead to the second video.
Her unprepared answer about map skills.
Watch as she redeems herself.

I’m going to write this from the point of view that she was being honest in the second video. It sounds extremely natural to me that someone would freeze up when being asked a question about an unbelievable statistic and having to come up with an answer on the spot in front of national TV. Her second answer is much more satisfying, and I’m sure she really wishes that she could have used that the first time.
I personally know people who talk like that when they get put on the spot without preparation. However, with practice I still believe she could have avoided this. I think that she should have practiced with friends and family shooting completely random questions at her and giving her a limited time to answer, even questions that don’t make sense. Hopefully she can look back at this and laugh and not let this push her into depression or something.

I still find it very unlikely that 1/5th of Americans couldn’t find the US on a map. Here we have a literacy rate well above 90%. If someone can read, how could they not find the US on a map? I almost wonder if that was using made up statistics.

Just figured I’d share this for those of you (including myself) who were at first questioning if she herself could even locate the US on a map!

  1. Educational Experiences at Healthy Home Blog Says:

I taught first grade for many years. We studied map skills in Social Studies and most of the first graders I taught would have been able to find the United States on a map.
I’m not sure why this contestant answered as she did, but I do think stage fright rattled her thinking.
