Luckily Medtronic found their own problem before Washington DC medical malpractice lawyers had to find it for them. The sad thing is that this small glitch may have caused as many as five deaths.
The wires were produced in 2004, and although they apparently worked the majority of the time with no problems, there were reported minor fractures in some of the lead. These minor fractures however in rare cases could have very major repercussions. The event is not being called a recall because they are only urging people to check the wires and return them if they have the fracture in the lead. If not, and the wires still work fine, then it has been deemed safe to keep them in use.
