You most likely, like all of us, have been stuck waiting for a ride, or for a meeting to start, or for a car trip to be over, and have been bored to death wishing that there was something to do. It isn’t any new news that cell phones are able to get on the Internet, however the limitations of Cell Phone internet access are vast. The ridiculous length of many URL’s makes it a chore to type in specific files and visit tons of sites. However, Avot Media is aiming to allow cell phone users to watch, bookmark, and find videos online without having to deal with all those annoying URLs. On your mobile web browser, go to avotmv.com, which is the Product site that has direct access to the videos. (Please note, the video service offered is FREE, but you will be charged based on your cell phone carrier’s standard internet access fee) Once you arrive, it’s fairly easy to see what you need to do to get started watching videos. You can browse a list of what I’m guessing are the most popular videos, or you can search text. Everything was working basically perfect for me until I got to the actual page to watch the video; I was stuck with a still frame and the video would not play. If you want to see a list of supported phones, which I later found, check this page. This isn’t their fault, it’s the fault of my semi-outdated LG cell phone browser. This website is aimed more at newer phones and blackberry type devices such as the iPhone, although it is possible that your cell phone could access the videos even if it isn’t on the list, which I linked above. If the video did not load for you, all hope is not lost. You can go to their website in your computer browser. (This will redirect you to http://avotmedia.com, their Corporate Site) There, you can view the site as if you were viewing it on a mobile phone. I tried to search for a few videos, but my search terms weren’t bringing up any results, so I clicked on one on the main menu called the Facebook News Network. It was actually a funny but true representation of what Facebook is like. It’s fairly easy to see how videos like these could help pass the time in a boring situation, I actually wish that my phone supported streaming video now!
Constantly, Avot is working on improving their service. You can read about their updates on the Avot Media Blog.
Overall, this service looks like something really great for those of you who have at least a semi-modern cell phone. There are still a few kinks that could be worked out in the search system, such as providing suggestions if your keyword is bringing up no results at all. I think that a service like this would work great for music as well, as mp3 and midi files have the same problem of long URLs. Also, many more cell phones have the ability to play music files, so I really feel that they could expand this service to reach a much wider audience. However, for the audience that they are targeting it seems to be great. It’s free, so be sure and check it out whenever you get the chance.
