A Truly Efficient House

What if every house was completely solar-powered… and efficient? I truly think that the environment and the world as a whole would be a much better place. Every other year, in Washington DC, people from many different Universities gather in Washington DC to plan, design, and build these true “green houses”. This year, starting tomorrow, the event will be taking place from the 11th to the 19th of this month. This year, BP is sponsoring the Solar Decathlon (Solar Decathlon is the name of the event). Throughout the event, you can read about what is happening on site via the blog. The event hasn’t even started yet and you can already read entries and view pictures, so be sure and check it out. If you are interested in science or learning about the solar powered houses that are built during the event, then that blog is the place you should go to find out about it.

For BP, this is just one of the many ways that they are helping to further improve the global ecological system. BP is investing literally HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars into things like this, so it is fairly obvious that they are really serious about the environment. BP has developed a plan that states that with just 200 square miles of solar energy generators, we would have enough electricity to power the entire world’s electrical needs. BP is also helping experiment in the extremely-clean wind-generated electricity, which although it does not show as much potential as solar power, it does show potential. With more research (which BP is funding), we may discover ways to make wind-generated energy more efficient.

One thing that I admire about BP is their strive for improvement, even though their current gas station plan that is in development would be the most eco-friendly gas station on the planet, they are still striving for better, even more eco-friendly ideas. BP is really playing it smart. In one sense, they are investing in many other technologies so that when gas is no longer needed to power cars, they’ll still be powerful in the business world. But in another sense, BP is playing it smart by protecting the world that they (and we) live in and helping to make it a better, safer, and healthier place.

That would be so cool to have a solar-powered house that was efficient. Ive been thinking for a while that I’d like to have a solar-powered sunroom to keep plants during the winter.
